The Nullification Crisis

The Nullification Crisis was a domestic crisis during the Jackson era, in which the idea of nullifying a hated tariff was floated around by the state of South Carolina. Jackson, with hopes of preserving the union, vehemently opposed nullification, leading to a confrontation. However, in 1833, disunion was averted by Henry Clay in the Compromise Tariff of 1833, which pleased South Carolinians, and Jackson's Force Act.
